STEM project with the Mayor's London Scientist Exhibition 2021

Malay, Areen, Hala, Habiba, Mithul, Katrina, Shareena, Gurbani, and Yahya all from ARA Primary and Secondary school are undertaking a climate resilience project called Floating Garden.

The challenge is to design and build a model of a structure that people can grow their crops on, even when their land becomes flooded. Their model is for a farming allotment based on local materials that will survive seasonal flooding and protect the crops from damage. On Wednesday 9th, they launched their prototypes in a pool. They have demonstrated that these are fit to float and useful to protect crops against flooding events!

As part of the ongoing work on their model, our Alec Reed Academy floating Garden Team has shared their STEM project with the Mayor's London Scientist Exhibition 2021. This is a platform for young Londoners to showcase their STEM projects and activities by submitting and displaying photos of their CREST Award activities.

Over half-term, the team were told that they have been selected to receive the Royal Institution School Science Show (which is worth £800)!  This will entail a school show, a community show and teacher CPD from their professional science demonstrators. So, we are all very excited about this event that we hope to share with our school community early on September this coming academic year!

Finally, the project results will be used to achieve a CREST DISCOVERY Award. This certified passport, is their first evidence of peer-reviewed scientific project work that can be entered as reference of wider academic work for applying to studying at colleges or universities once they finish school.
